Double T Simmentals (Tim and Tam Clark) of
Turtle Lake, topped the 2006 Dakota Feeder Calf
show. 36 pens, which included 143 steers where
placed on feed October 21 and followed thru
harvest. The contest includes competition in
WDA, ADG, Marbling, retail product value per day
of age, and a total combined score.
Double T’s winning pen consisted of 3 purebred
Simmental steers, 2 sired by KS Dexter L691 (ASA
# 2120563) and 1 sired by GA Prime Rib N341 (ASA
# 2204419). They ranked 3rd overall
in ADG (3.59), 3rd overall WDA
(3.61), 8th in Marbling (Small 50),
and 1st in Retail product per day of
age ($5.02). Double T’s shrunk harvest weight
averaged 1398.5 pounds. The average for the 108
head selected for the pen of three competition
was WDA (3.30) ADG (3.12), RPV/DOA ($4.36).
The Dakota Feeder
Calf Show Feedout project was
developed to
discover the value of spring-born beef steer
calves. The Show is held at Turtle Lake, ND in
October with the calves fed to finish at the
NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center.
When the cattle were sold in May after 212
days on feed,
the project averaged $107.89 profit per head
before interest expense. Profit before interest
expense ranged from $232.95 per head for
pen-of-three cattle with superior genetics to a
$6.23 per head for poorer performance. Double T
Simmental’s pen had an average profit per head
of $227.35 per head. |
